Cultural Things to do in Brisbane

Do you want to explore Brisbane’s culture? In this blog post, we’ll be exploring some of the best cultural activities that Brisbane has to offer. If you’re looking for something fun to do with friends or family in this river city, this post has what you need! Find out what is happening in the arts, theatre, film and other cultural events.  Have you got a group that you want to transport, then book a bus and we will take you to all the locations that you want to go to.

Catch some modern art at QAGOMA

Queensland Australia Gallery of Modern Art, or QAGOMA, is the largest modern art gallery in Australia. You will also find exhibitions on contemporary art. They have a good representation of local, national and international artists. You will find art across many levels within the building as well as outside it. It’s definitely a must see from a cultural perspective when visiting Brisbane.

Visit Newstead House

If seeing a bit of history is more your thing, then Newstead house is not one to miss. Newstead house is Brisbane’s oldest surviving home, which was built in 1846. What started out as a modest cottage evolved over time into what it is now, a huge residence with picture perfect views of the surrounding areas across the river.

Immerse yourself in the art at the Queensland Art Gallery

The Queensland Art Gallery has a diverse and expensive collection of art pieces from all around the world and in various style, including traditional Australian paintings and Aboriginal art. You can also find artwork by famous artist like Picasso. There is plenty of stuff to also keep the kids busy as the gallery runs a learning program for children.

Browse at the State Library of Queensland

The State Library of Queensland is really impressive. It’s a great place to browse any kind of text you might be looking for, but also sit down and have a read in the very comfortable seats here. You will also find some old documents like the Laboru Party’s manifesto to the Queensland public from 1892, and The Margaret Lawrie Collection of Torres Strait Island Materials, both of which are recognised by UNESCO. If your phone runs out of battery and you need to search the next thing on this list, then the library also has many computers to use.

Visit Boggo Road Gaol

Perhaps you’re feeling a little naughty, then why not take yourself down to the Boggo Road Gaol. Boggo Road, as it’s known, was Queensland’s main jail from the 1880s until the 1980s. Towards the end of it’s operational life it was infamous for poor conditions, not somewhere you’d like to have been sent. It is open to the public now though guided tours, where you can see what the penal system was like in Australia in the the 19th century.

Brisbane is a city of great culture and it can be hard to know where to start! With so many places to go, we’ve done the research for you. Go out there and explore Brisbane’s cultured side today!  Be sure to share these ideas with your loved ones who might not have been able to make this list themselves.  You need some more activities, check out our free activities in Brisbane page.
