AFL Grand Final Bus Charter: Group Transport to the MCG

AFL Grand Final day is the biggest sporting event on the Melbourne calendar — and one of the hardest days to get around the city. Roads near the MCG clog up hours before the bounce, parking is either non-existent or eye-wateringly expensive, and public transport runs packed all day. If you’re taking a group, a private charter bus is the cleanest solution by some margin.

Why groups choose a charter bus for the Grand Final

The MCG holds nearly 100,000 people. Getting that many fans in and out of Jolimont on a single day is a logistical feat, and if you’re coordinating a group of 15 or more, the public transport option stops being practical quickly. A charter bus means:

  • Your group travels and arrives together
  • You control your departure time — leave when you’re ready, not when the last train is going
  • No dealing with surge pricing or availability on rideshare apps
  • A clear meeting point and return arrangement everyone knows in advance

For corporate hospitality groups in particular, a private coach keeps the experience polished and avoids splitting a hosted group across multiple cabs or rideshares.

Getting to the MCG by bus

The MCG is located on Batman Avenue in East Melbourne, with good access from most directions. Coach drop-off and pickup points are available around the ground on event days — our drivers are experienced with major MCG events and will handle the logistics on the day.

From the CBD, travel time is typically 10–20 minutes in normal conditions. On Grand Final day, allow considerably more. Road closures, pedestrian crossings, and sheer traffic volume mean the closer you get to bounce time, the slower everything moves. We’d recommend planning to arrive at least 90 minutes before the game.

Planning your Grand Final group transport

Get in early — before the finalists are confirmed

As soon as the finalists are announced in mid-September, demand for Grand Final transport spikes fast. If you’re planning to go regardless of which teams make it, get in touch before the finals series starts to hold a vehicle. You can confirm details once you know you’re going.

For reference: standard minibuses seat up to 24, large minibuses up to 27, and coaches from 53 to 57. Once you’re above 27 people, a single coach is almost always more cost-effective than two minibuses.

Sort out pickups and a return plan

A central CBD pickup — hotel, office, or car park — works well for most groups. If your group is coming from multiple suburbs, we can build a multi-stop pickup route. Just include all locations when you enquire so we can plan timing accurately.

For the return, decide in advance whether you’re leaving straight after the siren or staying for the presentation. Either way, post-game traffic around the MCG is heavy — we’ll build the buffer in. Having a clear agreed return point avoids people wandering off and missing the bus.

What about the whole finals series?

If your team is making a run, you might want transport sorted across multiple finals — Qualifying, Semis, Prelims, and the Grand Final itself. We can help with the full series. Book early and we can hold vehicles across multiple dates while the campaign plays out.

Corporate AFL Grand Final transport

The Grand Final is one of the most sought-after corporate hospitality events in Australia. If you’re hosting clients or a team for the day, transport is one of the details that either lifts or undermines the experience. A well-presented coach with a professional driver takes the stress off whoever is organising, and keeps the group together throughout the day.

For corporate bookings we’d recommend Premium or Luxury vehicles. Let us know you’re hosting clients when you enquire and we’ll make sure the vehicle matches the occasion.

Other major MCG events worth planning ahead for

The Grand Final is the headline act, but the MCG hosts major events year-round. The same logic applies — large group, major event, charter bus is the easiest option. We regularly help groups get to:

  • AFL finals series (Qualifying, Elimination, Semi, Preliminary Finals)
  • Boxing Day Test
  • State of Origin and international rugby
  • Major concerts at the MCG

How far in advance should I book?

For the Grand Final: as early as possible. If you know you’ll be going regardless of who makes it, get in touch now to hold a vehicle. Availability tightens dramatically once the finalists are announced.

For other finals and regular MCG events, 4–6 weeks notice is usually sufficient — though popular dates fill faster than you’d expect.
